The large collections of ballads were grouped under two beads such as Vadakken Pattukal (Ballads of North Malabar) and Thekken Pattuka! (Ballads of Travancore). This broad division was based on a geographical classification of areas of origin. This paper is the thorough study of broad classification of ballads mainly of historical, religious and social themes.
