The periamelam was constituted of the Nagaswaram (a kind of oboe), the Tavil or big outdooe drum, the Ottu (drone) and cymbals was organised around the male Nagaswaram virtuso. The chinnamelam or small concert drum, the Tutti (a bagpipe-type drone) and cymbals was organozed around the devdasi or female dancers."
