RAHAT- A Traditional Irrigation Technique, Madhya Pradesh

  • Description :In olden days ‘Rahat’ was most important and effective technology for irrigation mostly in the plain areas of the country. Rahat is a technology of man power for lifting water from well. It is completely made of iron. There is big wheel of iron fitted with a excel rod. This structured wheel in which small iron buckets are fixed at alternative distance is put inside the well through the wooden structure at the mouth of the well. The bigger wheel is attached to a small teethed wheel which is again tied with a long wooden pole through which a pair of oxen pulls in a circle. As the result of moving of oxen in the circle the wheel rotates and the bucket ring dip into the water & throw it to the cannels meant with the wall of the well.
