  • Author :Manuel, Peter
  • Keywords :Ragas
    Hindustani music
  • Issue Date :1990
  • Publisher :Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi
  • Description :Raga differentiation is one of the basic operational axioms of Indian classical musics both Hindustani and Carnatic. Without raga one cannot perform Indian art music, each raga has a distinct and individual character for Indian art music. Those who are involved in the study of Indian music are aware that raga interpretation is far from being entirely standardized. Due to lack of of absolute uniformity in raga interpretation and the constant need to renegotiate or reiterate the often subtle details by which ragas are distinguished. The crux of the problem may be said to be the need to distinguish legitimate vanants of a raga from impermissible or illegitimate versions of a raga denvlog from the ignorance or willful indifference of the artist. It may have an immediate practical significance for a musician who has learned different versions of a raga, Present article is about intellectual and empirical problem of ragas.
