Description:
The video is a presentation on Rajasthani puppetry workshop which was organized by the West Zone Cultural Centre (WZCC) at Udaipur. The workshop was conducted by the assistant director of Bhartiya Lok Kala Mandal and puppetry specialist, Shyam Mali. He spoke about the nature and property of different woods and their functions. He conducted classes on puppet making which was well attended by puppeteers. The art of Rajasthani puppetry is called Kathputli. This word comes from the Hindi words 'kath' meaning wood and 'putli' meaning doll. This art form has been in existence for more than a thousand year. The Kathputli is the most popular form of puppetry in India and is an excellent example of string puppet theatre. The marionettes are controlled by a single string which stretches over the top of the marionettes into the hands of the puppeteers. The puppets are around 1.5 to 2 feet long.
