Koodiyattam, the only surviving ancient theatre art form is believed to be the predecessor of Kathakali. Guru Mani Madhav Chakyar is the legendary performer of this art form. Traditionally, the elders of the Chakyar community taught the art form to their youngsters. The name koodiyattam means performing together with the music of the mizhavu drums. Koodiyattam is performed with elements taken from Koothu, another ancient art form. The disciples live with the Guru in a Gurukul where they follow a strict schedule of everyday activities. The disciples practice postures until lunchtime and facial expressions thereafter. In the evening, they learn lessons in Sanskrit, it is said that only a Sanskrit scholar can be a good Koodiyattam actor. The day ends with an evening prayer where the students may assist the priests.
