Mohiniyattam is a solo dance tradition of Kerala performed by a maiden called Prakriti who offers herself to the deity of the temple through dance and music. It evolved as a part of the temple ritual within the precincts of a temple linked to the tradition of devadasis. Its keynote is called the Shringarbhakti and the basic tempo is known as lasya which are characterized by highly feminine movements. It is an art form meant primarily for spiritual expression. Apart from mythology, Mohiniyattam contains a range of themes from nature and folktales of Kerala.
