Description :This paper approaches some of the theoretical problems in North Indian classical music from an evolutionary and biological point of view. The biological thesis that the evolutionary theory is closely related to the species-concept can also be applied to Indian musicology. It is the purport of this article that raga which since at least the 9th century A.D. has been considered to be the central melodic concept in Indian classical music can best be viewed as a 'melodic species'.
