Description :Because of their elegant looks, emotive appeal and profound educational implications, many shorter and improved versions of the Foucault pendulum have found their ways into the hallways of famous government buildings, Central lobbies of universities and the foyers of some of the World's best science museums. However, none was to be found in India till very recently. The article describes the first successful Indian attempt in building a Short-length sustained Foucault pendulum at the Central Research & Training Laboratory of the National Council of Science Museums (NCSM).
Construction of a Foucault pendulum and its successful installation poses many daunting problems. Its performance is delicately dependent on various factors, some are intrinsic parameters of the design and some are due to external influences. Different designs have been tried world-over for better performance and long life of the pendulum. The first Indian effort succeeded in incorporating novel features in the pendulum's suspension System resulting in enhanced accuracy. The new design also got a patent cover for its innovative features.
