The traditional image of the nagaswaram is as an accessory in temple rituals, used bya temple functionary from a lower caste in his hereditary vocation which is totally in the routine service of the temple and has little to do with music as practised elsewhere. nagaswaram is an instrument whose auspicious strains are a requisite for solemnising and gracing any ceremony in the South.
